From a failed exclusive resort to a working city
Oakland Park was platted in 1922 for its oak-lined riverfront, but wealthy Palm Beach investors briefly folded it into "Floranada" in 1925, a lavish planned resort with two golf courses, a yacht club, and an aviation field, before the land bust wiped out its backers and left the half-built city to its residents. Floranada dissolved in 1929 and Oakland Park incorporated in its place.
